Beat the Drought
>
- Place a water butt under
a down-pipe to catch rain during wet spells and use for
watering the garden
- Grouping outdoor pots
together makes watering easier, increases humidity and
reduces evaporation
- Water plants in the
evening so they have more chance to absorb water before it
evaporates
- Use water-retaining gel
granules in hanging baskets
- Water hanging baskets
slowly to aid absorption
- Place pot saucers under
plant pots to catch water
- Mulch flower beds & pots
with decorative bark, gravel, washed seashells or
pebbles to help retain moisture
- Cut the base off plastic
lemonade bottles, remove lid and insert upside down into the
top of growbags as a water-retaining funnel when watering
tomatoes, peppers etc.
- Plant drought tolerant
annuals such as Petunias, Antirrhinums, Pelargoniums,
Penstemons or Verbenas
- Use a high cut on your
lawnmower in very hot spells to help prevent scorching
- Cool dish or bath water
(containing only detergent) can be used for your garden
plants. (But do not use bath water on edible
plants/vegetables due to the risk of salmonella).
- Wear a sun-hat and high
factor sunscreen in the garden, even if it's cloudy, and
apply generously to sensitive areas like the back of your
neck, your nose, the front of your feet and the tips of your
ears!
- Drink plenty of
water/squash throughout the day and rest in the shade during
the hottest hours - the best part of gardening is sitting
back, admiring your handiwork and making new plans!
