Plant Import Restrictions
>
In October 2004, the Department
for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) launched phase 2
of a national advertising campaign to raise awareness among the
travelling public about the restrictions on personal imports of
certain plants and foodstuffs into the UK from countries outside
the EU.
Currently, it is illegal to
bring meat or milk-based products from outside the EU back to
the UK, and there are limits on other items such as fish,
shellfish, honey, eggs and some fruit and vegetables. You
can check for specific restrictions on
DEFRA's Import Database,
but the campaign's message to travellers is clear - If in
Doubt, Leave it Out.
The Food and Farming Minister,
Larry Whitty, said "People may not see any harm in bringing
food back to the UK when they return from a holiday or a
business trip, but some foods may contain pests and diseases
that threaten the health of our agricultural crops and
livestock, as well as public health. Because of these risks,
there are strict restrictions on foodstuffs brought back from
countries outside the EU. I would urge everyone to check the
rules before they leave the UK. If you are caught breaking them,
then you may face long delays, prosecution and a fine."
A mobile unit will also tour
30 UK locations to explain the campaign's key messages in
detail. |
