On the edge of an escarpment giving dramatic views over the Welland Valley and five counties, the castle's architecture has examples from every period of its 950 year history.  It is surrounded by some 18 acres of gardens, largely following the footprint of the medieval castle.

The vast 400 year old Elephant Hedge dissects the formal 17th century terraced gardens.  The circular yew hedge stands on the site of the mot and bailey, providing shelter for the rose garden.  Below the castle is the beautiful nineteenth century Wild Garden, replanted with advice from Kew Gardens.  Included in the gardens are many specimen trees and shrubs, including the remarkable Handkerchief Tree.

The wonderful thing about a large garden is the variety of flowering plants and trees that we have and there is always interest throughout the year.  From the arrival of the Aconites and Snow Drops heralding the arrival of Spring, through to the wonderful autumnal colours, there is always something special to see.  Of course it is the roses that dominate in mid to late June, in addition to the Dog Wood and Tulip Tree.

Head Gardener, Richard Stribley, conducts booked tours throughout the year.  If you would like more information about the guided tours of the gardens or castle, please do not hesitate to request a pack by email or by telephoning the office on 01536 771240.
